What is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo or Leucoderma is a pigmentation disease in which melanocytes (the cells which make pigment) in the skin are destroyed leading to white skin & white spots. As a result, white spots appear on the skin in several parts of the body. Similar patches also appear on both mucous membranes (tissues, which line the inside of the mouth & nose), & the retina (inner layer of the eyeball). The hair that grows in areas affected by Vitiligo sometimes turns white. The most extensively accepted view is that depigmentation occurs because Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease – a disease in which the person's immune system reacts against the body's own organs & tissues.
How Common is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo affects 2% of the population worldwide, and it is estimated that 65 million people in the world are presently struggling with vitiligo. Out of this 65 million, 20-35% of patients are children. In India, vitiligo affects 0.25-2.5% of people. 20% of people with vitiligo likely have at least one close relative who might struggle with the same condition.
What are the Causes of Vitiligo?
What are the causes of Vitiligo? The causes of Vitiligo are associated with many known and unknown factors. The prime cause of Vitiligo is considered “auto-immunity”. The autoimmunity state occurs due to bad or odd food combinations like eating milk & non-vegetarian food items together & many more. However, the known factors directly affect melanocytes' production, causing skin pigmentation disorders. Some of them are:
Genetic Factors
Around 30% of vitiligo cases are inherited through genetics. This means Vitiligo caused by genetics is due to two or more abnormal genes.
Neurogenic Factors
In this factor, small molecules that maintain brain activity are released through defective nerve endings, which causes toxicity to the outer skin layer, ultimately leading to Vitiligo.
Autoimmune Disorder
The development of Vitiligo due to an autoimmune disorder causes the immune system to develop antibodies that destroy melanocytes.
Self-destruction
In this case, Vitiligo is caused when melanocytes destroy themselves.
Complications of Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation in patches on the skin. While people with vitiligo generally have good health, they are at a higher risk of developing autoimmune diseases such as Alopecia areata, Type 1 Diabetes, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Thyroid Disease and Pernicious Anemia.
In addition to autoimmune diseases, people with vitiligo may also experience psychological or social issues, sunburn, skin cancer, hearing loss, and treatment side effects such as itching, swelling, and irritation of the eyes.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Vitiligo
Its holistic approach to a patient makes Ayurveda unique and highly effective in the treatment of most diseases that are not cured by another system of medicines. Unlike modern medicine, Ayurveda treats the individual and not merely the disease. It takes a holistic view of health, emphasizing a balanced diet, physical fitness, healthy lifestyle, hygiene, and body care for a disease-free, long, and healthy life. Basically, herbal extracts are used for prompt and fast healing. Ayurveda is the best option for vitiligo treatment because of its neutrality, permanency in results, no side effects, and uniqueness to deal with many diseases which are not being treated by other systems of medicine.
Unlike other treatment processes that jump straight to symptom management, Ayurveda plans to address the root cause of the disease. It begins by detoxifying the body so that medicines can work better toward treating the actual root cause of the disease.
