What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is an acquired autoimmune skin disorder affecting 1% of the population worldwide.

It can affect any part of the body. It develops early in life, between 10 to 30 years of age.

It will always show up before the ’40s of life.

It affects both man and woman. It affects all races of people, all skin type.

Melanocytes may be the target of a cell-mediated autoimmune attack.

Causes:

Focal loss of melanocytes results in the development of patches of hypopigmentation.

A positive family history of vitiligo is responsible commonly in those with extensive disease.

Melanocytes may be the target of a cell-mediated autoimmune attack.

Diseases like thyroid and diabetes 1 may also responsible to cause vitiligo.

Stress is also responsible to affect the immune system and causes hypo-pigmentation of the skin hence, causing vitiligo .

Clinical Features

Generalized Vitiligo 

Generalized vitiligo is often symmetrical and involves hands, wrist, knees and neck as well as the areas around orifices. The hair of the scalp, beard, eyebrows, and lashes may also depigment.

Localized Vitiligo 

Segmental vitiligo is restricted to one part of the body. The patches of depigmentation are sharply defined.

Types of Vitiligo:

Segmental Vitiligo

Segmental vitiligo is restricted to one part of the body and often to the one side of the body.

the patches are sharply defined, depigmented and covers only one half of the body.

Non-segmental vitiligo

Non- segmental vitiligo affects more than one part of the body. It covers both halves of the body and is often symmetrical . It majorly involves elbow joints, knee joint, wrist, neck, scalp, beard, eyebrows, lashes.
